Wednesday, 15th October
The nanny pronounces Gio’s second name ‘Telo’ as ‘Delo.’

“This baby has a high temperature,” said my wife.
I touched him
“Which temperature?” I asked
“You always say that,” she said.
We put a thermometer under his armpit and of course he wanted to pull it out.
The thermometer reading was normal. He was taken to sleep.

When I went to zip up his romper much later, he indeed felt quite hot.

Thursday, 16th October
Gio feels quite hot to touch.
We gave him Calpol and I went to buy him Zinat.
The lady at the pharmacy said the price was 830/- I asked for a discount and she said 700/-
The receipt said the price was 700/- and discount was 0.
I had also bought a packet of Gio’s calcium-fortified soya milk at 275/-
That’s 975/- gone in one morning for Gio.

About 2:00pm temperature was 38.6 degrees C

My wife had bought suppositories for Gio.
I deposited it.
Gio refused to eat pilau (a rice based-meal).
After a while, he dozing on the sofa! A few days ago, my wife had remarked that we never find Gio asleep on the floor or on a seat.

It is unusual to find Gio just seated like this

It is unusual to find Gio just seated like this

Gio refused to eat fries at first, but he eventually ate, being fed by the nanny.
The nanny then dressed him for bed.
We gave him medicine.
He threw up almost immediately.
The nanny changed his clothes and I deposited another suppository.
We gave him medicine again.
He threw up again.
The nanny changed his clothes again.
He was then taken to sleep.

Friday, 17th October
Gio took porridge
He was given medicine.
He threw up.
My wife called a doctor friend to ask for advice. The doctor friend was arrested for talking on the phone while driving.
My wife felt very guilty and focused her energy on getting him released.

We took Gio to the clinic.
Amid Gio’s resistance and protests, the doctor examined his ears and throat. A blood test was done as well.
Turns out he has a throat infection. The doctor said we continue with Zinat and prescribed something to prevent the vomiting. He said we should give Calpol instead of the suppository paracetamol, because with the suppository, we cannot be certain that it has been absorbed, and may end up overdosing the child when we give a subsequent dose.

Our doctor friend was eventually released with a warning.

Sunday, 19th October
Our neighbour had a birthday party. Gio, who was now back to himself, enjoyed himself. As did his dad.

Gio was trying to lap up some water that was on the bouncy castle.

6th To 12th October 2014 – New Nanny

Monday, 6th October 2014 – New Nanny
My wife left early in the morning to go interview other possible nannies. The one we had considered earlier did not seem too keen on the job.

In the afternoon, my wife came home and told the current nanny that she is being replaced.

Later, she came back and drove the nanny to the bus stop and afterwards brought home the new nanny.

Tuesday, 7th October
Day one with the new nanny. My wife, of course, gave many instructions on how things are to be done.
Gio woke up at around 10:00 (just like yesterday). He did not seem concerned about this new person.
Eventually, my wife left for work, leaving me at home with Gio and the new nanny.

Wednesday or Thursday – ‘Technical Difficulties’
The nanny reported that she was unable to operate the TV. She pressed this and that but was unable to get to Gio’s videos.
Gio tried to rescue the situation. He pressed this and that on the TV, (and probably the power switch on the wall) gave the nanny the remote control, waited in vain for his videos to come on screen and finally resorted to playing with his toys.
When my wife came in after work, he immediately gave her the remote.

Friday, 10th October

My wife was out and I told the nanny that I would put Gio to sleep.
When it was about time and I wanted to put Gio to sleep, he protested and fled to the kitchen where the nanny was.
(It was a bit amusing and I found it noteworthy that he considers the new nanny a refuge. I guess that’s a good thing).
“Let me put him on my back and put him to sleep.”
“No, I will put him to sleep,” I told her “and we don’t want him to get used to being carried on the back at night so that he can sleep.”
A while later, she came to the living room where we were and again said she wants to carry Gio on her back and put him to sleep.
“No,” I said. “I will put him to sleep.”
Ama tungoje Mama.” (Or let’s wait for Mama).
(The nanny normally goes to bed at around 9:30)
“You will wait until she comes back?”
“What time is she coming back?”
Haijulikani.” (It is not known). “If she comes back at 11 you will wait until 11?”
“She is coming back at 11:00?”
Mwache nitamlalisha.” (Just leave him I will put him to sleep.)
I was a bit annoyed.
She eventually went to bed. I let Gio play a bit and watch his videos then eventually took him to his room and he slept without much fuss.

Saturday, 11th October
My wife said the nanny reported that the previous night Telo’s dad really insisted on putting the child to sleep – is he able to do that? My wife told her that when she is not there I normally do it.

Sunday, 12th October – Whose Food?
We went to Church and left Gio at the room for children his age. Some parents sit there with their children and there are also some volunteers who look after the children.
After the service, when my wife went back to pick him, he had crumbs on his cheeks.
One or more of the following must have happened:
Gio saw another child being given food and he
– drew near eyeing the food and the caregiver gave him some of the food
– went and leaned forward towards the food until either his mouth was on the food or the caregiver gave him some
– went and simply took the food (this is a bit unlikely but cannot be ruled out).

25th And 26th September 2014 – Visiting, Watermelon!

Thursday, 25th September 2014

Nothing noted.

Friday, 26th September
We went to visit some friends in Athi River.

Gio loves watermelon!

We were supposed to leave and go back home but our friend asked us to spend the night there. Gio shared a bed with my wife. He seemed quite excited at this new environment and would not sleep. My wife, of course, did not share his excitement. She wanted to sleep!

20th to 22nd October 2013

20th October 2013 – Where Are The Teeth?

Went to church. Met some people we know, who have a daughter who is one week older than Gio. She has teeth!
I forgot to say earlier that my wife told me a short while back that her cousin’s son, who is (6 months old?) younger  than Gio, also has teeth.

1st to 3rd May 2013 – 100 Days

1st May 2013

Gio woke up around 5:00, as I predicted yesterday.

Bought a sleeping sack from Smart Baby at 1,500/=

IMG_9640My wife’s aunt visited.
Not surprisingly, she gave Gio a bath.

IMG_9376At night, my wife brought Gio to his cot. I was in the bedroom. Gio was asleep. She placed him in his cot and he woke up and started making sounds.
“This is the test,” said my wife, referring to putting Gio to bed while he is awake.
He continued making happy noises.
Then he started crying.
My wife came to check on him and left as I laughed.
“Let me leave you with your father who is laughing,” she said.
I looked at the clock on my computer. 8:52 p.m.
Gio continued crying.
My wife came back. She took him. 8:58 p.m.

She breastfed him and he slept.

2nd May

Gio has a stuffy nose and my wife says I am the cause. I recently had a cold of sorts.

IMG_9395Aunty said we should shave Gio’s hair so that it grows nicely afresh.
What is wrong with this current hair?
It will cut and fall of
Then if it cuts by itself it’s fine.

Aunty said we should not hand over the baby with his back towards the recipient.
Why?
He will reject/refuse people.

3rd May

Gio is 100 days old today.
